International Container Terminal Services Incorporated (ICTSI) has commenced work on the expansion of the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) in the Philippines. Under the PHP15 billion expansion projects, the company will add an additional berth (berth 8) to the port.

The construction of the new berth will be carried out in two phases and will allow MICT to manage increased volume demand and accommodate next-generation container ships that can transport up to 18,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU).

Berth 8 will add a total of 400 metres of quay and up to 12 hectares of yard land in stages, according to the plan. The water near the dock will be dredged to a depth of 13.5 metres, with the possibility of further dredging to a depth of 15 metres.

Additionally, ICTSI will also deploy eight new hybrid rubber-tyred gantries (RTGs) in March 2022 to increase the terminal’s hybrid fleet to 40 units. This move is in line with MICT’s aim of reducing its carbon footprint and making the port more sustainable.
