The Government of Khon Kaen has announced plans to trial a 26 km light rail transit (LRT) network running from Samran to Tha Phra station in Thailand. The new line will connect to the city’s other main rail routes by 2025. The Khon Kaen Transit System Company (KKTS), the operator of the network, is currently conducting an environmental impact assessment.
The Khon Kaen LRT project will be financed by the Administration and Capital Management Unit for Enhancing the Competitiveness of the Country (AEC). The funding covers the manufacturing of prototype parts for the trial project including bogies, train cars, traction motors, traction inverters, pantograph auxiliary power units, fasteners and cooling systems.
The LRT network will also support Thailand’s high-speed rail (HSR) projects by linking Nong Khai and Bangkok, as well as connecting to the dual-track rail network linking Khon Kaen and Nakhon Ratchasima.
