Vietnam’s Ministry of Construction has called for continued European Union (EU) support for railway development and sustainable transport as part of broader cooperation on infrastructure.
The Ministry proposed cooperation on policies covering water supply and drainage, underground space development and Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), as well as investment through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs). Additionally, they also called for greater exchange of experience in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT) and digital twin technologies for infrastructure management, operation and maintenance.
Further, the ministery also proposed cooperation on establishing new direct maritime routes or strengthening existing services to increase logistics capacity, reduce transport costs and support bilateral trade.
The EU has launched the EUR40 million Vietnam Transport Support Program, led by the French Development Agency (AFD). The EU is working with Vietnamese authorities to identify potential projects under the program, with a focus on three areas: railways, inland waterways and urban transport.
