The expert appraisal committee (EAC) on Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) matters has approved the development of an 8,100 km undersea telecom cable between Singapore and Mumbai via Chennai. The transnational fibre optic cable system Is expected to boost telecom connectivity between India and other SEA countries, including Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.

The Myanmar/Malaysia-India-Singapore Transit (MIST) Submarine Cable System project will be executed by Japan-based NEC Corporation. The cable system is expected to be operational in 2023. The total cost of the project is approximately USD400 million, although this figure might change as work progresses.
