Green Star Environmental Company Limited in collaboration with Chosun Refractories ENG and Republic of Korea (RoK)-based SK Ecoplant has launched the first waste-to-energy (WtE) plant that treats domestic solid waste and industrial waste to generate electricity in Phu Lang Village, northern Bac Ninh province, Vietnam.

The plant has a waste treatment capacity of 800 tonnes per day and the incinerator which can handle 100 tonnes of household waste and 80 tonnes of industrial waste per day, generates 6.1 MW of electricity using the waste heat recovery technology from the RoK. The plant was developed at a cost of USD45 million, of which USD32 million was invested in the incinerator by the Vietnamese and Korean firms.

The project will provide around 40 million kWh annually to the locality. It is expected to become a model for exchanging carbon certificates in line with the 1995 Paris Agreement and a bilateral agreement between Vietnam and the RoK.
