The opening of the Pink Line monorail in Bangkok has been delayed for the third time as Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) has extended the contract by a period of 345 days. The line is now expected to open in August 2024 instead of July 2023.
Northern Bangkok Monorail (NBM), the contractor of the project, has said that the cause of the delay was due to Covid-19 pandemic related slowdowns.
The 34.5-km-long monorail line will link Khae Rai in Nonthaburi to the Min Buri area in the east of Bangkok. The Pink Lin will have 30 stations, all of which will be elevated. As of April 2023, works on the line have been 96.43 per cent completed. The run set of trials have been scheduled for January 2024.
