The Government of Bangkok has introduced Project Green Light, an initiative developed in partnership between the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and Google to optimise traffic flows using artificial intelligence (AI). The project, launched in February 2025, applies AI and Google Maps data to analyse traffic patterns and adjust signal timings in real time across 561 intersections.
According to the BMA, initial results from 55 intersections show traffic flow improvements of 80–90 percent. The system adjusts green, yellow, and red light durations dynamically, reducing congestion, idling, and greenhouse gas emissions.
With global pilots in cities including Seattle, Jakarta, Hamburg, and Abu Dhabi, Project Green Light has demonstrated reductions of up to 30 per cent in vehicle stops and 10 per cent in emissions. Commuters and traffic officers in Bangkok have welcomed the early results, though experts stress the need to pair the system with improved public transport for long-term impact.
