Star Telecom, a JV of Laos-Asia Telecom and Vietnam’s Viettel Group, has launched its 4G network services in Vientiane, Laos. With a speed around ten times more than that offered by 3G services, Star Telecom’s 4G service will provide significant value additions to its customers such as high definition online television. Since its launch in October 2009, Star Telecom has built a network of over 4,000 base transceiver stations, covering 95 per cent of Laos’s area. Its current subscriber base of over 2.5 million accounts for 49 per cent of the country’s telecom market.
