The Singapore government will invest SGD800 million (USD619 million) in transport research over the next five years under the Research, Innovation and Enterprise (RIE) 2030 programme to strengthen the country’s position as a global transport and connectivity hub. Around two-thirds of the funding will support research into autonomous transport systems and digital twins for connectivity, while the remainder will fund innovation across the aviation, maritime and land transport sectors.
The programme will support the development of autonomous vehicles, vessels, robotics, AI-enabled transport operations and digital twin technologies to improve the movement of passengers and cargo across Singapore’s land, sea and air networks. Research initiatives include autonomous port operations, AI-driven airport and air traffic management, predictive vessel traffic management, automated rail depots, next-generation autonomous rail technologies and intelligent traffic management systems. The funding is also intended to advance transport decarbonisation, improve operational efficiency and support Singapore’s long-term strategy of becoming a global leader in smart, technology-enabled transport.
