The Government of Singapore is set to begin autonomous shuttle trials in Punggol by the last quarter of 2025, following the arrival of new five-seater self-driving vehicles from China-based WeRide. The vehicles, called GXRs, have already been deployed as robotaxis in Beijing and Abu Dhabi and are now expected to serve as fixed-route community shuttles in Punggol to improve local connectivity.
WeRide currently operates a self-driving eight-seater minibus at Resorts World Sentosa, which in July 2025, became the first autonomous service in Southeast Asia approved to run without safety personnel onboard. The company has secured autonomous driving permits in six countries and is working with Geely-owned Farizon to scale up production of its vehicles.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is planning a phased rollout, beginning with trials without passengers and a safety officer onboard. Later phases will transition to remote monitoring once residents and road users are familiar with the system. Other firms, including Pony.ai in partnership with ComfortDelGro, and SMRT with WeRide, are also preparing for autonomous shuttle deployments in Singapore, with additional trials expected by early 2026.
