Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH) has announced plans to develop a Kota Kinabalu Light Rail (KKLR) system aimed at easing traffic congestion and enhancing public transport in the state capital of Malaysia. The KKLR is intended to complement the ongoing rollout of public bus services, including the pink bus system expected to be fully operational in 2026.
The proposed light rail is expected to improve connectivity between key areas, particularly the Kota Kinabalu International Airport and the city centre. The initiative is part of a strategy to reduce youth migration, create jobs, and support industrial and tourism infrastructure development. Funds allocated to Sabah, including the state’s 40 percent share, will be prioritised for essential infrastructure and transport upgrades.
PH Sabah expects the KKLR system to serve as a catalyst for sustainable urban growth, enhancing mobility, efficiency, and tourism in Kota Kinabalu while supporting the city’s geostrategic potential.
