Redondo Peninsula Energy Incorporated (RP Energy) consortium has withdrawn from the proposed 660 MW coal-fired power plant in Zambales province. The consortium includes Meralco PowerGen Corporation, a subsidiary of Manila Electric Company, Therma Power Incorporated, a subsidiary of the Aboitiz Group, and Taiwan Cogeneration International Corporation.
The project has been on hold since 2019 due to geological concerns about the destabilisation in one of the slopes which could impede construction. The project was also affected by a summons of Kalikasan issued against it, which was eventually resolved.
The company is reserving the location for a potential gas alternative to supply as a part of the competitive selection process (CSP) by Meralco, or use the site as a distribution utility (DU) or use it for the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
