The Government of Malaysia has announced plans to extend its ongoing USD10 billion East Coast Railway Link (ECRL) rail project to Thailand’s border. The government is open to proposals for track extension and further integration into existing railway networks as well as future infrastructure developments.
The current alignment of the ECRL project is about 40 km away from the border of Thailand. The line is expected to be completed by 2027.
Further, the Government of Thailand has announced plans to build two ports to bypass Malaysia’s shipping route. Currently, works are underway for a USD29 billion Chumphon-Ranong Land Bridge project which is expected to be implemented in 15 years by 2040.
