The construction of Penang’s first light rail transit (LRT) line will begin by Q4 2024. The project is taken over by the federal government of Malaysia and is expected to be completed by 2030. The contracts for the LRT project have been divided into three main components and SRS Consortium has secured a contract for the first segment after a single sourcing request for proposal. Meanwhile, the other two remaining contracts have been on an open tender basis.

The LRT will span 29 km, covering 20 stations, including two interchange stations in Komtar and Penang Sentral in Butterworth.
