Qatar-based telecommunications operator Ooredoo will be launching 3G mobile services in Myanmar by the third quarter of 2014. In terms of mobile penetration, the current level in Myanmar is reported to be below 10 per cent. According to reports, Ooredoo aims to capture 30–50 per cent of the market by 2016. Myanmar has one of the world’s least developed telecom infrastructures. Served by a single state operator, mobile SIM cards were reportedly sold for upwards of $250 each.
