NEC Corporation (NEC) and Sumitomo Corporation have secured a contract from Hitachi Rail to deploy a communication system and an automated fare collection (AFC) system on the North–South Commuter Railway (NSCR) in the Philippines. The order will cover a 35.4 km section from Solis to Malolos.

For the communication system, NEC will provide network infrastructure, radio systems, broadcasting systems for station buildings, and surveillance camera systems. Additionally, NEC will also supply a central system for fare settlement and ID management for transit smartcards, along with station equipment such as ticket gates and ticket vending machines.

The 147-km-long NSCR connects Calamba to New Clark City further, connecting Metro Manila with the neighbouring regions in the north and south. The line is financed by an official development assistance (ODA) loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
