Work on Yangon’s 230 kV electricity transmission ring system project is expected to be completed by June 2018. Due to a delay of more than two years, it is presently under the review mission stage.
The project entails upgradation of the 230 kV Thida-Thaketa (8.2 km) and Thaketa-Kyaikasan (8.6 km) transmission ring lines; expansion of the existing 230 kV switchyard at the Thaketa substation to accommodate two new 230 kV transmission lines; upgradation of the existing 66 kV Kyaikasan substation to 230 kV; and construction of new 230 kV substations at South Okkalapa and West University. The work will complement associated upgrades being carried out by the Myanmar Electric Power Enterprise (MEPE).
The project is funded through concessional loans from ADB and the Export-Import Bank of Korea worth $80 million and $100 million respectively. In addition to the loans, the government will provide counterpart support of $3.3 million equivalent, covering administration costs, environmental and social safeguard measures, and the construction of access roads and staff housing in substation areas.
