Construction of Penang’s Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) is slated to begin in Q4 of 2026, with preliminary works such as soil investigations already underway. MRT Corporation (MRT Corp) has confirmed that contractor SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd will update soil data last collected in 2018 to finalise design plans. Utility relocation works are expected to commence within the next six months.
The RM10 billion project, which targets completion by December 31, 2031, will follow a typical infrastructure S-curve timeline — slow at inception, accelerating through 2028–2029. Officials remain confident of staying on schedule. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim officiated the groundbreaking in January 2025, launching what is seen as a major transformation of Penang’s public transport landscape.
