The Governments of Thailand and Malaysia are advancing efforts to restore the Sungai Kolok–Rantau Panjang railway line and boost regional trade through enhanced cross-border rail connectivity. The governments agreed to finalise key transport MOUs and resume rail services by July 2026.
The revived line complements Malaysia’s East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) and will support joint customs inspection facilities to streamline freight movement. Plans also include reinstating direct rail services between Bangkok, Padang Besar, and Butterworth. Both nations are exploring digital integration of transport systems, while Malaysia progresses on its Perlis Inland Port (PIP), expected to open in 2026.
