The Ministry of Transport of Thailand has announced plans to launch a new rail project that will use electric vehicle (EV) technology to connect the urban areas of large cities. The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has partnered with King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) to develop a prototype electric train. In the testing phase, the train will run from Ladkrabang station of the Airport Rail Link to the KMITL and Hua Takhe stations.
The project is in line with the Government of Thailand’s aim of making the country one of the leading manufacturer and exporter of EVs in the ASEAN region as well as to reduce the country’s emission of greenhouse gases by 20–25 per cent by 2030.
