A consortium comprising Colas Rail, Thales and Egis have secured a EUR1 billion contract from Mitsubishi Corporation to design and build the turnkey rail system for the first underground line of the Metro Manila Subway in the Philippines. Of the total contract value, Colas Rail’s share is valued at EUR760 million.

Under the terms of the contract, Colas Rail will undertake engineering and system integration works, install track and Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling, install power distribution and overhead lines and provide depot equipment for the line. Thales will provide the Integrated Communications and Supervision (ICS) and Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) systems for the project.

The subway project involves the design and construction of a 35-km-long entirely underground subway line with 15 stations, linking East Valenzuela in northern Manila to Terminal 3 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in the south of the capital city. The engineering phase is expected to start in 2022. Construction is expected to be completed by 2027.
