The Ministry of Transport (MOT) of Malaysia has approved plans to expand the Penang International Airport (PIA). The project is expected to cost more than RM1 billion and costs will be covered by  Malaysia Airports Holding Bhd (MAHB) through an investment-recovery model. Meanwhile, the State Government of Penang is expected to cover part of the infrastructure cost including route expansion as well as infrastructure near the airport.

However, the total cost is subject to change and will be finalised after a tender process is undertaken by MAHB.

Once the expansion project is completed, passenger capacity at PIA will increase from 6.5 million passengers annually to 12 million passengers per year.
