The Ministry of Transport (MoT) has announced plans to launch an open-loop fare payment system on Malaysia’s public transport networks, particularly those operated by Prasarana Malaysia Bhd and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB). The total cost of the project is RM29 million.

Design and development work for the open payment system is expected to begin in March 2024. Passengers will be able to use their bank cards (credit or debit) to pay for fares in addition to the existing Touch ‘n Go smartcards and single-use tokens. Prasarana is currently finalising the implementation plan for the Rapid Rail network, which includes the Kelana Jaya Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line, the Ampang LRT Line, the Kajang Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line, the Putrajaya MRT Line and the Monorail.

Additionally, the KTMB Komuter network system in Klang Valley is being upgraded with the Open Payment system called Automatic Face Collection (AFC). The new system is equipped with scanners on the gantries that support open payment methods, including credit cards, debit cards, Touch ‘n’ Go, and QR codes via the mobile application KTMB (KITS).

In line with this, MoT will introduce multiple contactless fare payment options to make public transport more convenient for passengers and will end Touch ‘n Go’s monopoly on cashless payments.
