The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded a SGD589 million contract to a consortium comprising CRRC Qingdao Sifang Company Limited and Singapore CRRC Sifang Railway Vehicles Service Private Limited (CRRC Sifang) to supply the rolling stock for the Cross Island Line (CRL). The consortium will supply 44 six-car trains, with an option for 11 additional trains.

The new trains will be powered by a 1500 V D.C. overhead catenary system which is more energy efficient compared to a 750V D.C. third rail system. The units will also feature condition monitoring and diagnostic systems for early fault detection. Some trains will also be equipped with an automated track inspection system.

The partners will also provide Long-Term Service Support (LTSS) for the units. The fully automatic trains will be delivered progressively starting 2027.

The 50 km CRL, which is slated to open in 2030, will be Singapore’s longest totally underground line, carrying 600,000 passengers daily.
