A consortium comprising Korea National Railway (KNR), Korail, KRT Company Limited, Saman Company Limited, and Dongmyeong Company Limited have secured a contract to prepare the feasibility study for a proposed light metro system in Bali, Indonesia.

The study will cover the Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport – Central Parkir section of the rail system and will cost around USD11.78 million. Financing for the feasibility study will be provided by the Export-Import Bank of Korea (Korea Eximbank) and is expected to be completed by the end of August 2024.

Plans for Bali’s light metro system were announced in September 2023. Works on the initial 9.5-km-long section will be carried out in two phases. The first phase will cover the 5.3-km-long route from I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport to Central Parkir while the second phase will cover works on the 4.2-km-long route from Central Parkir to Seminyak.

The system will be mostly underground with certain sections operating at grade. Future stages can extend the line further north to Canggu and Mengwi, however, no concrete plans have been announced yet.
