The Huay Xai airport expansion project is expected to be completed in 2020. Currently, over 7 per cent work has been completed and work is in progress for expanding the runway from 19 metres to 36 metres in width and from 1,450 metres to 1,660 metres in length. The project involves the expansion of the runway and improvement of aircraft parking, passenger car park and passenger terminal in order to meet the increasing needs of air travellers in the region. It is expected to entail a cost of LAK 146 billion. The project will enable the landing of ATR aircraft and increasing the number of flights from the existing one to two flights per day to accommodate more tourists and business people.
