The Government of Ho Chi Minh City has completed land clearance for its second metro line, Ben Thanh – Tham Luong, allowing construction to begin in December 2025. The 11 km line, with 9.2 km running underground, will connect the city centre to the northwest. The project, valued at VND47.9 trillion, has faced multiple delays but now moving forward after resolving compensation issues.

Workers are finalising infrastructure relocation at key stations, including Hoa Hung and Dan Chu Roundabout, with fenced-off areas near parks and major roads. Some businesses have encroached on cleared land along Cach Mang Thang Tam and Truong Chinh streets. The metro system expansion aims to cover 355 km in the next decade and 510 km by 2045, following a Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) model. Unlike previous plans relying on foreign loans, the city will finance Metro Line No. 2 using its state budget.
