The Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) have initiated a feasibility study for a metro system in Phnom Penh to address traffic congestion in Cambodia. The study follows an agreement signed in Beijing last year and involves assessments of potential transport corridors, including major hubs such as the bus station, railway station, and both international airports. Officials emphasise that the study will guide future transport planning but does not confirm construction.

This effort builds on previous studies examining metro, tram, bus rapid transit, and automated guideway systems. Socio-economic experts believe that a metro system could modernize Cambodia, improve urban mobility, and attract investment. The project may adopt a public-private partnership model, potentially using a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) scheme to attract investors. Further details will be announced upon completion of the study’s initial phase.
