The Government of Laos has approved feasibility studies for a railway route connecting Vientiane with Thakhek in the Khammouane province. This route will be developed as a part of the Laos-Vietnam Railway Project (LVRP).

In line with this, the government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Lao Petroleum Trading Lao Public Company (PetroTrade) to develop the project. The company is seeking to hire consulting firms that will undertake the feasibility studies in collaboration with the relevant government agencies. The study is expected to be completed in 24 months.

The LVRP is a 452 km high-speed electric rail project that will require a total investment of around USD5 billion. The project will be developed in two phases, with the first phase covering the 139 km section connecting Thakhek town with Vietnam’s Vung Ang seaport. The second phase will cover the 312 km Thakhek- Vientiane route.
