The Government of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) has announced plans to undertake a USD6 million project to build an international transit terminal in Vietnam’s Can Gio district. The terminal will have about 7.2 km of wharves and once operational, is expected to handle 10 – 15 million TEUs of cargo as well as accommodate larger container ships (24,000 TEUs).

The project will be implemented in seven phases. Work on the first phase will commence in 2024 with initial operation of the terminal scheduled to start in 2027. Work on the final stage is expected to be completed in 2040, after which complete operation on the terminal will commence.

Cargo throughput in seaports of HCM City grew by 7.34 per cent during 2015 – 2020, however this is projected to fall to 5 per cent for the 2021 – 2025 period.
