Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has launched a closed trial of facial recognition technology for fare payment at Punggol Coast MRT station, involving selected LTA officers and other public officers.

Under the trial, participants can enter and exit the station through a modified fare gantry using facial recognition, provided their facial profiles are linked to their SimplyGo cards. The same SimplyGo cards can continue to be used at other MRT stations through conventional tap-in and tap-out functions.

The modified gantry forms part of a preliminary technology trial to assess the feasibility of facial recognition fare payment in an operational environment, including testing hardware and software and gathering user feedback. LTA said there are currently no plans to expand the trial and did not disclose its duration or whether similar trials are being conducted at other stations.
