The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has added two new facilities as part of a smart grid development initiative to increase the stability in renewable energy (RE). The Renewable Energy Forecast Center (REFC) and the Demand Response Control Center (DRCC) are both located in  Nonthaburi.

The REFC plans to reduce grid intermittency by handling fluctuations in the power system from renewable capacity. The centre will ensure better management of RE resources and stabilise t power supply. Meanwhile, DRCC plans to reduce power usage and improve grid stability. It will collaborate with aggregators (LA) to prove incentives to the customers in the form of compensation in exchange for lower energy consumption. Currently, the DRCC is in a pilot phase and accommodates 50 MW from two public LAs. It also plans to include private LA’s in the power sector.

Going forward, EGAT plans to establish 11 REFCs and five DRCCs in each region of Thailand. These centres will enable over 8,000 MW of power generated from RE sources, in compliance with EGAT’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
