Thailand’s Electricity Generating Authority (EGAT) is advancing feasibility studies for the country’s first 300 MW small modular reactor (SMR), targeted for commissioning by 2037, with estimated investment of THB 60–70 billion. The proposed pilot project aligns with the draft Power Development Plan (PDP2026) and reflects growing interest in nuclear power amid volatility in global fossil fuel prices. EGAT is appointing a consulting firm to assess suitable SMR technologies and potential sites, with the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) identified as a priority candidate.
Potential locations will be assessed for infrastructure readiness, water availability, transmission grid capacity and exposure to seismic activity and natural disasters. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has highlighted the need for Thailand to strengthen workforce development, stakeholder engagement, site selection, industry participation and financing mechanisms as it advances nuclear energy preparations. The initiative comes amid renewed nuclear power interest across Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia.
