The Department of Energy (DOE) awarded two hybrid grid projects in the Philippines to the Maharlika Consortium. The consortium comprises Maharlika Clean Power Holding Incorporation and Singapore-based WEnergy Global and joint venture (JV) CleanGrid Partners. Both projects will consist of hybrid solar and diesel generator power plants having a smart transmission and distribution network.

The first microgrid will be built in the province of Palawan and is expected to produce 17.3 GWh by 2038. Meanwhile, the second microgrid will be built in the province of Barangay Bulalacao and is expected to generate 11.7 GWh by 2038.

The projects are expected to produce a minimum share of 35 per cent of renewable energy (RE) one year upon commencement which will increase the share to 50 per cent by 2040.
