China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) has announced that Malaysia’s 665 km East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) has entered its final construction phase, with 80 per cent of works completed. Nearly 400 km of track has been laid, and the contractor expects the first section—from Kota Baru in Kelantan to Gombak district in Selangor—to be completed by December 2026 and opened the following month. The remaining activities now focus on housing, communications and power engineering.
The ECRL spans four states with 20 stations, linking Port Klang to the East Coast Economic Region. Construction began in 2017, and full operations are scheduled for January 2028. The line will halve travel time between Kota Baru and Kuala Lumpur and support multimodal integration between rail and maritime transport.
Developed under Malaysia–China Belt and Road collaboration, the ECRL is the largest bilateral economic cooperation project between the two countries. Malaysian Industrial Development Finance estimates that the railway will contribute 2.7 per cent to national economic growth during its development period. Authorities are also considering future extensions northward into Thailand and potentially southward to Singapore to strengthen regional rail connectivity.
