The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) has revised its Green Mark scheme in Singapore which will require new and existing buildings to meet greater sustainability standards to be certified green. In addition, the redesigned scheme will target the reduction of embodied carbon in new construction. Embodied carbon refers to the carbon or energy consumed in the manufacturing of construction materials as well as during the construction process.

The revised scheme will place a greater emphasis on the integration of smart technology, the construction of cleaner environments for building users, and the reduction of embodied carbon in developments in Singapore. The Green Mark 2021 scheme is in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The BCA Green Mark certification scheme, which was established in 2005, is a rating system that assesses a building’s environmental effect and performance.
