Japan’s JERA Co., Inc. and Thailand’s Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore the development of hydrogen and ammonia value chains in Thailand. Under the agreement, the partners will assess market opportunities, technical, economic and commercial feasibility, the use of hydrogen and ammonia for power generation and fuel substitution, as well as the policy, regulatory and environmental requirements needed to support their deployment.
The collaboration supports Thailand’s target of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 by evaluating low-carbon fuels as part of the country’s future energy mix. JERA and EGAT will examine the entire hydrogen and ammonia value chain, including production, transportation, storage, distribution and end-use applications. JERA is currently developing Japan’s first integrated ammonia value chain, targeted for completion by fiscal year 2029, while EGAT will contribute its expertise as Thailand’s state-owned power utility.
