The  Government of Vietnam has approved a national project to apply Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in smart transport, following the signing of Decision No. 2692/QD-TTg. The project will be implemented under the Ministry of Construction and aims to establish a unified, secure and efficient IoT platform to support the management, operation and exploitation of smart transport systems, with data sharing across ministries and local authorities.

During the 2026–2028 phase, at least two cities will pilot integrated smart transport operation centres using IoT-based traffic data. All eastern sections of the North–South Expressway will complete non-stop electronic toll collection, with 100 per cent of ETC data connected to the national smart transport data-sharing platform. Around 90 per cent of legal documents, standards and technical regulations related to IoT in transport are scheduled to be completed or submitted for issuance during this period.

Between 2029 and 2035, the programme targets the deployment of integrated smart transport operation centres in at least five cities and ten provinces. IoT sensor infrastructure will be installed on at least 50 per cent of major routes, including expressways and ring roads, supporting traffic monitoring, safety management and infrastructure maintenance. The Ministry of Construction will lead implementation, working alongside the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and local governments, while funding will combine state budget allocations, private investment, ODA and international cooperation.
