The tender process for the second segment of the Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT) Mutiara Line—from Macallum on Penang Island to Penang Sentral on the mainland—is currently under evaluation. According to Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, the review is being conducted by Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp), the project owner and implementing agency. The evaluation includes revisions to design and technical aspects before a final decision is made.
The first segment of the Mutiara Line, covering Silicon Island to Komtar and Macallum, has already been awarded to SRS Consortium through direct negotiation based on existing contractual obligations with the Penang state government. While reports suggested Gamuda Bhd had withdrawn from bidding for the second segment, Chow clarified that no official notification was received and that the move does not affect project implementation. MRT Corp has also invited both local and foreign companies to participate in the ongoing tender process, allowing joint bids subject to technical and financial compliance.
Separately, the state government has initiated the Juru–Sungai Dua Toll Plaza Traffic Dispersal (PTJSD) project, with Package 1 awarded to Naza Engineering and Construction Sdn Bhd by PLUS Malaysia Bhd following an open tender. The full project is expected to be completed within four to five years.
