The Government of Hanoi has launched a project to restore the Tô Lịch River by pumping water from West Lake through a 1.5 km dedicated pipeline system. The initiative, led by the Hà Nội Management Board for Infrastructure and Agricultural Projects, marks a major step in efforts to clean and revitalise one of the city’s most polluted waterways.
The plan will be implemented in two phases. From September 9, 2025, water from West Lake is being channelled into the river. From September 20, 2025, once the Quang Bridge weir is completed, treated water from the Yên Xá wastewater treatment plant will also be supplied at an initial flow of 200,000 cubic metres per day, later rising to 270,000 cubic metres. This replenishment is expected to stabilise the river’s water level at +3 to +3.5 m, support drainage, and prevent the riverbed from drying out.
