The Government of Indonesia has completed construction of the IKN Section 3A Karangjoang–KKT Kariangau toll road, a key link in the Balikpapan–IKN corridor. The section connects with the Balikpapan–Samarinda Toll Road and forms part of the larger IKN Toll Road network.
The 7.5-km route includes three lanes, four overpasses, and three bridges over the Wain River, with around 4 km elevated and 4.2 km at grade. Despite the complexity of construction, the work was completed ahead of the original December 2025 target. The section will undergo operational trials before being opened to full traffic.
The new corridor is part of the multi-section IKN Toll Road network (Sections 1A–6C), scheduled for full completion by 2028. Once operational, the network will cut travel time between Balikpapan and IKN from 2–3 hours to about 1 hour, supporting the development of Indonesia’s new capital city and its associated infrastructure.
