Malaysia’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation has outlined plans to step up participation in the ASEAN Power Grid Initiative, focusing on greater energy security and opportunities for cross-border power trade. Vietnam’s growing wind power capacity is being viewed as a potential contributor to this regional integration.
Further, Vietnam’s wind resources with Malaysia could help meet future demand, complementing Malaysia’s goal of reaching 40 percent renewable energy by 2040. Solar and wind are expected to play a leading role in this transition.
While the grid can currently support additional renewable sources, authorities highlighted the need for long-term investment in battery storage and smart grid systems. These measures fall under the National Energy Transition Roadmap, which also includes pilot projects in clean energy.
