The Department of Energy (DOE) of the Philippines has flagged over 100 renewable energy projects at risk of termination due to non-compliance with project timelines. Of the 105 projects affected, 88 have either been delayed in their pre-development phase or have seen no progress. These projects include solar, hydro, wind, geothermal, and biomass initiatives, primarily delayed by issues related to grid connection and securing land rights.
The government aims to ensure timely execution by monitoring progress and revising regulatory frameworks. Energy Undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevara stated that non-performing contracts could be reassigned to new developers. The Philippines is pushing to meet its renewable energy targets of 35 per cent by 2030 and 50 per cent by 2040, with over 1,400 service contracts granted, representing a potential capacity exceeding 156,700 MW.
