The Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) has announced plans to commence construction works on the 180-km-long Funan Techo Canal in 2024. The USD1.7 billion project, funded by the Government of China, is the first waterway canal in the country and will connect the Phnom Penh Autonomous Port to the province of Kep.

In October 2023, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CBRC), the canal’s developer, started works on a feasibility study which is currently ongoing.

The canal will include three waterway dams, 11 bridges, and a 208-kilometer sidewalk. Additionally, it will offer navigation assistance and other cross-river infrastructure. With a width of 100 meters and a consistent depth of 5.4 meters, the waterway will be capable of accommodating cargo ships of up to 3000 deadweight tonnage (DWT).
