Works have been completed on the first phase of the Bakheng Water Treatment Plant in north Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority (PPWSA) has now commenced construction on the second phase, with completion scheduled for 2024.

Phase 1 will supply water to around seven districts including Dangkor, Por Sen Chey, parts of Meanchey, Sen Sok, Russey Keo, Kamboul and Preak Pnov. Meanwhile, phase 2 will extend coverage to the outskirts of Phnom Penh and double the plant’s capacity.

This is the largest water facility in Cambodia, with the plant’s two phases adding around 390,000 cubic metres of total production capacity per day. The treatment plant will be financed by two loans worth USD195 million from the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) as well as USD100 million from the European Investment Bank (EIB).  Additionally, PPWSA will also invest around USD80 million in the project.
