Vietnam Electricity (EVN), the country’s biggest power producer and sole distributor, has signed five PPAs to buy electricity from Laos from 2021. The agreements signed with Laos’s Phongsubthavy and Chealun Sekong groups will allow EVN to buy electricity from five hydropower plants with a combined capacity of 363 MW. The country is expected to face severe power shortages from 2021 as demand will outpace supply by 6.6 billion kWh in 2021 and 15 billion kWh in 2023.
