Vientiane Capital’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system is set to begin a three-month trial operation by the end of August 2025, offering free rides to the public during the period. The project has achieved 71.64 per cent construction progress, with key infrastructure components—including stations and dedicated lanes—expected to reach 90 per cent completion by the end of July 2025. The BRT system aims to be fully operational by late 2025.

The BRT fleet consists of 55 electric, 12-meter air-conditioned buses, each with 40 seats. A total of 28 buses were delivered in November 2024 from Chinese manufacturer Chery Wanda, with the remaining units expected soon. Services will operate daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., with buses running on exclusive lanes for improved reliability and reduced city centre congestion.

The initial route will connect six key locations: Chao Fa Ngum Park, Inpeng Temple, Morning Market (Vientiane Bus Station), Patuxay, Phonekheng, and the National University of Laos. The network will integrate with the city’s existing bus system. Future expansion plans include BRT connectivity to Wattay International Airport and the Laos-China Railway Station by the end of 2026, enhancing regional and international accessibility.

The Vientiane BRT system is part of broader efforts to modernise urban mobility, reduce emissions, and improve the public transport experience in the Lao capital.
