Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has launched a project to transition diesel-fired fishing boats in Malaysia to solar energy. The UTM Smart Eco-Photovoltaic Boat project, will be conducted in the waters of Kampung Mersing Kanan. Installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on the boats will be entirely funded by UTM.

UTM has also launched a similar programme in raft homes in Tanjung Surat, Kota Tinggi. The programme was introduced in December 2021, and till date, the agency has installed PV panels on 13 raft houses.

The programme is a part of a programme between UTM and Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd (BIMB).
