The US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) has signed a grant agreement with PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) for a feasibility study to support the development of two cross-border power interconnections between Indonesia and Malaysia.
The study will assess the viability of interconnections between Sumatra in Indonesia and Peninsular Malaysia, as well as between Kalimantan, Indonesia and Sabah, Malaysia. PLN has selected Washington-based advisory firm, Delphos International Limited, for the study, to be carried out in partnership with Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB).
In August 2023, PLN, TNB and SESB agreed to study the feasibility of an undersea electrical interconnector to enhance energy security. The project is part of a broader strategy outlined in the ASEAN Interconnection Masterplan Study (AIMS), with funding support from the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
