The Jakarta MRT Line Phase 2A, with a budget of USD1.4 billion, aims to increase public transportation use to 60 per cent by 2029 as part of Jakarta’s transportation master plan in Indonesia.

The Jakarta MRT Line Phase 2A is an underground extension of 5.8 km from Bundaran HI to Kota, currently 33.4 per cent complete as of March 2024. It will include six stations: Thamrin, Monas, Harmoni, Sawah Besar, Mangga Besar, and Glodok. The Bundaran HI to Monas section is set to be operational by 2027, with the rest extending to Kota by 2030. Japan-based Sojitz Corporation was awarded a USD289 million contract for the development, with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Construction responsible for the track work and related infrastructure.

Phase 2A will feature Indonesia’s first underground stacked stations at Sawah Besar and Mangga Besar, 28 meters below ground. Delays caused by global issues have pushed the operational timeline to 2030. The project is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) through a development assistance loan. Further expansion plans include the East-West line, which will connect Jakarta to the provinces of Banten and West Java over 84.1 km with a budget of USD10.6 billion.
